This Grandfather Long Case Clock was made by Oldhamer John Barlow.
His bothers Benjamin, Edward and James were also local clockmakers. John Barlow
also made the sun dial at Royton Church in 1758 and worked on the clock of
Oldham Church (later to become St. Mary's Parish Church).
Our
perception of time has changed over the past few hundred years. Once we used
the position of the sun and stars to provide us with a guide to the time. Now
we need to know the exact second, minute and hour to help us move around, arrange
meetings and cook food.
The tick tock of this clock, which was made in Oldham, reminds us how time
seems to have quickened up. Our days can feel full, with increasing demands
made upon us. We can find it hard to think ahead and see how our actions will
affect the future of the planet.
Once
upon a time there was all the time in the world then, in no time, or so it seemed
- there was hardly any time at all is that the time?
It's time for me to go must catch the bus, catch the train, catch the plane
the frantic movement to do this, do that, go to work go insane, I'll talk to
you another time the constant consequence.
Time I was out of here, half the time I don't know where we find the energy,
make sure you have a good time Bye bye.
